Rhode Island Real Estate License Renewal Requirements in 2026

Rhode Island 2026 License Renewal RequirementsIn Rhode Island, most real estate licensees need to complete 24 credit-hours of continuing ed by April 30, 2026.

Rhode Island Real Estate License Renewal Deadlines:

  • If you obtained a RI real estate license PRIOR to January 1, 2020, your renewal deadline is April 30, 2026.
  • If you obtained a RI real estate license AFTER January 1, 2020, your renewal deadline is your anniversary date every two years from the date on your license.

Continuing ed can be completed at any time during the two year renewal cycle, but most Rhode Island real estate brokers and salespersons wait until the last minute to get started. If you are one of those licensees, don’t worry we’ve got you covered.

Importantly, it takes about 24 hours to complete 24 credits of RI DOBI approved continuing ed, so if you are reading this in April 2026, get started.

What are the required topics to complete as part of the 24 credit hours?

Pursuant to 230-RICR-30-20-2-2.3b, at least nine (9) of the twenty-four (24) clock hours must come from the following CORE subject areas:

  • Rhode Island law defining relationships between licensees and consumers;
  • Rhode Island law pertaining to real estate licensure;
  • Rhode Island landlord-tenant law;
  • The law of contracts;
  • Federal, Rhode Island, and local law pertaining to fair housing and the treatment of any individual in a protected class as designated in the Rhode Island Fair Housing Practices Act, R.I. Gen. Laws Chapter 34-37;
  • Lead hazard mitigation or other environmental issues pertaining to real property;
  • Local ordinances and Regulations pertaining to residential real estate;
  • Financing the purchase of real estate;
  • Ethical considerations in real estate transactions; or
  • Coastal real estate, wetlands, flood plains and sea-rise.

Importantly, at least three (3) of the nine (9) core subject area clock hours must be in Federal, Rhode Island, and local law pertaining to fair housing and the treatment of any individual in a protected class as designated in the Rhode Island Fair Housing Practices Act, R.I. Gen. Laws Chapter 34-37.

The remaining fifteen (15) clock hours may be completed with any Department-approved continuing ed course.

When is the deadline for Rhode Island real estate licensees to complete continuing ed in 2026?

It depends. If you were initially licensed before Jan 1, 2020, your license renewal and continuing ed deadline is April 30, 2026. If you were licensed after Jan 1, 2020 your license expires every two years from the date printed on your license.  There is no grace period. As a reminder, continuing ed credits can be completed any time during the two year renewal cycle. Licensees frequently wait until the days and weeks leading up to the deadline to complete their continuing ed, but credits can be completed any time during the two-year cycle.
